My husband transferred to Pearl Harbor in the mid 80's. I was always a horse girl and needed a job, finding Camp Smith Horse Stables. Jerri interviewed me and that was that. I started giving riding instruction in the coral based arena. We had about 15 horses up there, and I brought my own for use too, Chips. With 45 students throughout the week lessons riding in circles could get monotonous. We ventured out to the mountain. Our riders were amazing. We even played Auatralian Pursuit around the heli-pad, making sure we left no hoof impressions. I helped with dinner rides while Denise led the trail rides and I'd occasionally follow to keep the stragglers moving. A few of the memorable horses then were Silver, the big Grey, Howzit a Morgan gelding, Martini a tb cross, Lake (Jerri's favorite at the time) a,stocky layed-back QH. A little black mare, she was new but bucked people off so was traded later. There was the very safe pony Auntie..Grey in the face, nearly 30, and Soona. Jerri named him that and would joke that he got his name 'cuz Soona or later he'd founder. She always laid him up when that happened. The little kids loved him. Jerri was proud of the students we had and we ran a tight ship. Order of the day, no horse smell could waft to the Colonel's house, straight up from the stable. I think we cornered the market for pine oil on the island. It was so much fun working there.
